Managing Companies’ Computer Network Systems

by on Aug.07, 2011, under article

Successful businesses today need to ensure their computer networks are running efficiently and effectively. The network administrator is responsible for overseeing a company’s network. Almost every industry is dependent on computers, which make a networking professional an integral part of most business’ success. Network administrators maintain existing computer networks and launch new ones to ensure their users are seamlessly connected, whether sitting next door to one another, or across the world

Businesses have become increasingly reliant on their computers to maintain productivity and thus, profitability. A network administrator is specifically involved with the deployment, maintenance, and troubleshooting of software as well as hardware. He or she is educated with the necessary technical expertise needed to respond to a variety of technical issues reported by users or by changes in the business climate that may impact the business specifically.

Network administrators are often required to hold a Bachelor’s degree; however, it is not uncommon for a successful network administrator to have an Associate’s degree or professional certificate augmented by significant work experience. Those who have a four year degree will typically have a major like information science, computer science, or management information systems (MIS).

Certain upper-level management positions in the computer networking field require a Master’s degree in business administration (MBA) with a concentration in information systems. An MBA graduate can successfully complete his or her degree in two years as long as he or she currently has a Bachelor’s degree. This graduate coursework focuses on business topics like marketing, accounting, finance, and management.

As you consider your career opportunities in this field remember that computer technology changes quickly and often. Because of the unique nature of computer technology, even those with an advanced degree are encouraged to acquire certifications that pertain to recent computer networking advancements. The certification courses are offered through computer associations, vendors, as well as computer schools. Though not the industry norm, there are some instances where a network professional will have little formal education but tremendous experience supplemented with a variety of relevant certifications.

It should not be surprising that network administration professionals find employment in many different industries. Many work for companies in the telecommunication industry, financial companies, or the insurance specialty companies. They also worked for companies that design computer systems. Furthermore, schools and government agencies offer a fair amount of employment opportunities to them as well.

The outlook for the employment of computer network administrators should continue to grow faster than most careers. Those who earn certifications or a college degree will find that training will provide the best employment opportunities. The median annual salary for network administrators, a few years ago, was a little above $66,000. Salaries for the same time period, categorized by industry, ranged from over $70,000 for management companies to $56,000 for those employed by schools.
